The registration certificate in Germany is usually called Anmeldebescheinigung, Meldebescheinigung or official registration confirmation. You receive it after completing your Anmeldung, which is the address registration at your local Bürgeramt, Bürgerbüro or Einwohnermeldeamt.
This document matters because many later steps in Germany depend on it: residence permit appointments, bank accounts, health insurance, university enrolment, phone contracts, tax ID, and sometimes employer or family-benefit paperwork.

What is a registration certificate in Germany?
A registration certificate is proof that you are officially registered at an address in Germany. It is not the same as a rental contract; it is issued after the city registers your address.
You may need the registration certificate for many practical and official processes, including:
- Applying for residence permit
- Sign Up at University
- Opening a Bank Account
- Taking out Health Insurance
- Getting a Cell phone
That is why city registration should be one of your first tasks after moving into accommodation in Germany. Here is my video on the first 5 things to do after landing in Germany.
How to apply for a registration certificate in Germany?
When you register with your local citizens’ office, you receive your registration confirmation. In general, anyone who moves into a residence in Germany must register within 14 days of moving in. If you cannot get an appointment within that period, book the earliest available appointment and keep the confirmation.
You normally need a valid passport or identity document, your appointment confirmation if applicable, the registration form used by your city, and the landlord confirmation called Wohnungsgeberbestätigung. Non-EU citizens should also carry their visa/residence documents if they already have them. If you register with a spouse or child, check your city’s document list for marriage or birth certificate requirements and translations.
In many cities, you receive the registration confirmation immediately if all documents are in order. Your German tax ID is usually sent separately by post and is important for employment, salary, tax and pension processes.
What comes after the registration certificate?
Once you are done with city registration, the next step for many non-EU residents is the residence permit appointment. Your registration certificate can be one of the documents requested for that process. Here is my YouTube video about how to apply for a residence permit in Germany.
